Mild temperatures and a large crowd were on
hand for the Kansas Gelbvieh Associations field tour held on August 15 with
guests coming from as far away as Australia. The tour began at Overmiller
Gelbvieh/Red Angus near Smith Center. The guests had the opportunity to
view heifers, cow/calf pairs, as well as, the bull calf crop which will be
offered at the Overmiller’s upcoming spring sale. C & V Gelbvieh
contributed a pen of their show stock for the guests viewing. While at the
Overmiller’s the guests were treated to a barbeque lunch where Rick
Pfortmiller with Igenity gave information on the benefits of using Igenity
and the new testing available.
The group then traveled to Gilly’s Gelbvieh
near Jewell, KS. Roger & Angela Reiter told the crowd about their program
and showed just some of their herd and the bulls that they are incorporating
for use. The tour continued to the Andersons Red Maple Gelbvieh in
Jamestown viewing cow/calf pairs, their National Western Res. Ch. Gelbvieh
bull and young heifers. Richard Swenson with ADM Alliance told about some
of the mineral supplements available through ADM.
As the day grew warmer the guests were
treated to homemade ice cream made with liquid nitrogen at LeDoux’s Poker
City Ranch stop. While the ice cream was great, the pens of cattle held the
groups interest even more. Poker City will also be having a dispersal sale
in conjunction with the KGA “Pick of the Herd” sale in Salina on November
28. Post Rock Cattle Co. was the final stop of the day. Bred heifers,
cow/calf pairs and A.I. sires were all available for viewing along with some
of the young bulls to be offered for their spring sale. Bill and Leland
Clark also had a pen of their young bull prospects and a contest to pick
their pen for the National Western Show in January.
Stucky Gelbvieh and Meadowlark Gelbvieh Farm
also had pens at the last stop offering the guest a chance to view just a
portion of what their programs had available. While enjoying the great
steak dinner offered at Post Rock the group heard from Susan Willmon from
the AGA office and Keynote Speaker Matt Spangler from the University of NE
who spoke on “Using DNA in Yearling Bull Genetic Evaluations.”
Thank you again to all the hosts and sponsors
who made this tour a great success.
