Fall Tour Wrap-Up

The Kansas Gelbvieh Association had a very successful fall tour in August highlighting five KGA Gelbvieh breeders in the Eastern district.  The tour began with lunch at Dawson Creek Gelbvieh where Bob & Karla Beying, Brian Beying and family, and Tim Beying and family displayed for those in attendance the bulls and breeding cattle on their farm and spoke about the Dawson Creek breeding program.

The group then moved on the 4B Gelbvieh where Steve and Anna Buffo spoke of how they make a success raising their cattle in an urban area and the opportunities presented for educating the public on raising beef cattle.

Hart Farms was the next stop in the tour where Bob Hart highlighted his donor cows and shared with the group his success in utilizing embryos in his program.

The tour ended at Triple K Gelbvieh where AGA president Al Knapp and his wife Mary had their show cattle on display along with other breeding cattle and bulls.

Hightower Cattle Company included a group of their cattle and highlighted their program for all of the Gelbvieh enthusiasts on the tour.  Jason Hightower, current KGA Vice President, gave an overview of what his farm operation has to offer.

The tour was completed with dinner at Triple K which was served by the Reno Bobwhites 4-H club.

Dave Watson of Garvey Feeds spoke of the feed that they offer at Garvey Feeds which is a lower cost ration without sacrificing growth in the cattle.

Janette Hightower, feed manager with the Leavenworth Coop also spoke of the feed and other items that can be found at their facility.    The group then heard talks from Cale Wiehe, district coordinator for the KLA, and Frank Padilla and Brandon McEndaffer with the American Gelbvieh Association.

KGA Members honored as AGA 2010 Member of the Year/strong>

Al and Mary Knapp of Bonner Springs, KS were honored as the American Gelbvieh Association 2010 Member of the Year at the association’s annual convention in Denver on January 9. The AGA honors members who, through their work, have brought credit to the Gelbvieh breed and their association.  Al and Mary Knapp of Triple K Gelbvieh have been honored with that distinction.  Al and Mary are active members of the KGA where Al has served in many capacities over the years.  They are also members of the AGA where Al and Mary both serve on the AGA Foundation committee, which Al co-chairs.  Al has also been a member of the AGA Board of Directors and was recently elected as AGA president. Triple K Gelbvieh is a family owned purebred Gelbvieh and Balancer seedstock operation.  They have been raising Gelbvieh cattle since 1996 after purchasing a purebred Gelbvieh bull for breeding some Angus based commercial heifers.  When they saw what Gelbvieh added to the commercial cows and the hybrid vigor of the calves they were convinced.  At the same time, their son Nick was in 4-H and wanted a Gelbvieh heifer.  After a couple of years they saw the maternal differences in the Gelbvieh cows and were convinced.  By 1999 they converted to a solely purebred Gelbvieh seedstock operation. The Knapps attend 8-10 shows each year including the AGJA National Classic, the American Royal, where they serve as Gelbvieh Superintendents, the Kansas State Fair, and the Kansas Beef Expo and have shown many champions.
