Miller Gelbvieh is a family enterprise which started late in 1990 with the purchase of 4 bred purebreds from Sandy Knoll Farm.  Around the same time 3 percentage bred heifers were purchased from J & L Farms.  From the beginning the emphasis was on fertile, high volume, good-uddered and good-dispositioned females who raised a stout calf every year, bred back promptly,  and looked good doing it.

Several  years ago, Miller Gelbvieh held a dispersal sale.  Cattle sold to breeders from Alaska to South Carolina.  Miller Gelbvieh doesn’t show or advertise heavily but the cattle only needed a discriminating audience to sell themselves.  LGWR Martha Jane 79D 791G ET and her progeny made quite an impression at the sale, one open heifer calf daughter selling for 10,250.

In the meantime we have reloaded.  We retained a number of Martha Jane embryos–she was an unusually prolific producer-and purchased outstanding genetics from leading programs around the country.  We had 46 calves born this season.  Well over half are ET calves.  MLLR 12M, the top selling bred female at our dispersal is back on the farm in an embryo transfer program and doing a tremendous job.  In four flushes she has produced 65 good embryos and only had a single unfertilized egg in the 4 flushes.  I have never AI’d her the second time.  She epitomizes the breed’s superior fertility, a trait we cannot afford to lose . She is the ideal type and kind with a beautiful udder and a moderate frame.  She is homozygous polled.

The last several years Miller Gelbvieh has gone strictly AI and ET.  Among the purebred sires being used are Carolina Fortune, Carolina Hero, Extra Exposure, Extra 2106K, Northern Wind, Rupple Gunnison, Freedom, Free Agent, and Bennett G196.

Since our dispersal we have placed added emphasis on Balancers.  Balancers are 1/4 to 3/4 Gelbvieh with the balance Angus/Red Angus of known parentage.  Combining the fertility, maternal superiority, red meat yield, performance, and efficiency of Gelbvieh with the calving ease and superior marbling of Angus produces an optimal beef animal.  Using Balancers simplifies crossbreeding by using bulls with the desired percentages to maintain the preferred percentages within the herd.  Cherokee Canyon, arguably the best muscle bull of any Angus of any color, has been the Red Angus sire of choice for red Balancers.  He has done a fantastic job for us.  Black Angus sires used are Morgan’s Direction, an ABS son of Future Direction, who is the gold standard carcass bull in the Angus breed, and Foresight, a son of Papa Forte and Bon View Gammer 85, the dam of New Design 878.  Morgan’s Direction is a calving ease sire with exceptionally short gestation.  He is the breed’s leading bull for Rib Eye Area and ranks 4th in the breed for tenderness based on shear force testing of progeny.  Foresight is a high performing, big scrotal bull with excellent carcass merit.  He is the #1 bull in the breed for tenderness based on shear force testing of progeny.  Both Foresight and Morgan’s Direction have 7 of the 8 known favorable genetic markers for tenderness.

This fall we will be selling every female that belongs in a registered sale including ET calves, bred heifers, and all donor cows.  We will also sell a few herdsire prospects.  Featured will be the black, homozygous polled 12M/Morgan’s Direction balancers, Martha Jane/Cherokee Canyon ET homozygous polled bred heifers, and the Gunnison/Miss Sweety (homo polled, black Kara/Freedom) homozygous polled, double black ET offspring.  Several are  donor quality and a number really ought to be shown.  We also have first calf daughters of TJB Lady Granite 838H ET carrying the service of Carolina Fortune and Extra Exposure in the offering.  838H sold for $16,250 at TJB’s dispersal last fall.  One of these daughters is homozygous polled and homozygous black and will make someone a lot of money in the course of her lifetime.  Click here for sale information.

This is a very young offering with only 3 in the entire offering who have reached or exceeded their third birthday.  Including bulls, about 45 head will sell.   A high percentage is homozygous polled.   The cattle will sell on October 13 just across the border into Missouri at Osceola MO in conjunction with the Mitchell Herd Reduction Sale.  Mettler Sale Management is managing the sale.

Visitors are always welcome. Give us a call or drop us a line. We love to talk Gelbvieh.

ATTENTION JUNIORS!!!

A Special Offering of elite Gelbvieh Genetics

A Special Invitation to Juniors

A Special Incentive for Juniors

The Offering

Miller Gelbvieh is Dispersing October 13, 2007 at the “Triple Your Pleasure” sale in Osceolo, Missouri in conjunction with Mitchell Gelbvieh’s herd reduction sale.  We are offering donors, ET calves, breds and pairs.  We don’t have a herd bull; every animal offered is the result of AI and/or ET matings.  Progeny of some of the greatest females in the breed will sell.  Only three in the entire offering have reached three years of age.  This dispersal offers some of the freshest, most economically balanced, and consistent genetics to be sold this fall.  The good news is that the cattle also have style and presence.  Many of these ought to be shown.

The Invitation

Miller Gelbvieh is extending a special invitation to Juniors to take advantage of the excellent selection of show prospects.    Some of the really good prospects aren’t even born yet and some

will be at side of their dams as babies.  But 17 exceptional open heifers, ranging from 8 months to 14 months are selling on October 13 and we want you to harvest the results of our advanced breeding program.  Don’t be left behind!

The Incentive

Miller Gelbvieh is offering cash incentives to Juniors who show Miller Gelbvieh genetics purchased at this dispersal sale.  Any female or embryo purchased in the name of a Junior at this sale is eligible.   The immediate progeny of any bred female purchased in the name of a Junior and registered in the name of the same Junior, is also eligible for cash awards.   Proof of official placing must include a photo from the show and a letter from the judge confirming the placement.  One cash prize will be granted for the single highest level attained only, and will be awarded at the conclusion of the female’s show career.  Cash shall be awarded as follows.

Each of the heifers has something to offer, all are prospects in their own right.  However, several deserve special mention.  The 4 Morgan’s Direction/MLLR 12M ET Balancers are essentially 2 pairs. 817S and 818S are much alike: moderate framed, exceptionally sharp fronted, upheaded, with plenty of rib and volume.  820S and 823S are a bit bigger framed with perhaps a bit more performance.  All are really sound on the move.  All four will make terrific cows as well.  All are homozygous polled.  If you are looking for Balancers, take a serious look at these.

Two black and two red purebreds have sorted themselves toward the top.  Though the camera was not kind to either one, 115S and 829S have a tremendous future ahead of them. 115S is a bit more moderate but by sale day, I predict she will cause quite a stir.  Square, very sharp fronted, big topped, with mass and volume, she has it all and has really come on strong.  She is exceptionally docile.  I hate to part with her but someone will be rewarded..  829S is a bit bigger in type and kind but is much the same.  Both move with exceptional freedom and both are very sound structurally. 829S’s full ET sibs didn’t have as good recips but they have also really come on and both are really clean fronted, feminine, and sound.  They may end up right at the top yet.  The 3 ET full sibs are homozygous polled and double black.  Black status will be available the day of the sale.

129S has always looked good and has a winning personality as well.  Long sided, excellent muscle, an attractive profile, and a good disposition make her a can’t miss.  She is also homozygous polled.  She goes back to 31X, the dam of Gizmo.  112T is as good a G196 calf as I have seen.  Most say that G196 progeny look really good only when they come into production.  In that case, she is headed for greatness because she has looked good as a baby, looks good as an open heifer, and just keeps getting better.  In my mind, all the good show heifers have to look like they will be good cows.  112T has the look.

There’s a good chance some of the younger heifers not mentioned here will overtake some of the older ones.  We’ve just weaned them and as they began to recover and take off again some have made dramatic changes.  There will surely be a sleeper or two in the bunch.

Finally, I would like to call attention to some of the “unborn.”  Any of the matings could produce a great one but several I think have exceptional potential, though I can’t guarantee a heifer. 12M/Carolina Fortune, 122M/Carolina Fortune, and 31R/Carolina Fortune have tremendous possibilities as all the females are outstanding individuals who are exceptionally clean fronted and Fortune covers all the bases.  118R/Hero, 114P/Hero, 219R/Hero and the 12M/Hero embryos could be something special.  I really like all the Northern Wind matings and any animals with Cherokee Canyon in the pedigree will be some of the best.

So grab a catalogue or go online at mettlersales.com/pdf/mitchell2007.pdf, study your lesson–isn’t that what juniors are expected to do–and find a winner, have some fun,  and make some money.

Best of Luck!

Myron Miller
